Working with the Medicine Woman Archetype, Aether is my element. I perceive Aether as the bridge between our embodied earthly experience and the wholesome blueprints of All that Is, containing all wisdom of the ages gone and to come and where our allys, guides and teachers in Spirits exist. It is pure potential, where time and space does not exist.
I imagine it as the womb of the universe, dark, fertile and spacious. And I believe that it is our wombs that are the anchors and portals to this space. Where we feel a deep knowing and when we are connected to our womb space (and we don’t need a physical womb to do this), we are in connection with the Earth Mother and the Sky Father connecting the physical with spirit.
While there are many ways to tune into this connection, one way I find particular potent is through drumming. There is just something primal about the beat of the drum, something that resonates way back into my cellular memory. Layne Redmond, describes the primal resonance of the drum beat in her book When The Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm as follows:
“It is often said that the first sound we hear in the womb is our mother's heartbeat. Actually, the first sound to vibrate our newly developed hearing apparatus is the pulse of our mother's blood through her veins and arteries. We vibrate to that primordial rhythm even before we have ears to hear. Before we were conceived, we existed in part as an egg in our mother's ovary. All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother. This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother. Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb and she in turn formed within the womb of her grandmother. We vibrate to the rhythms of our mother's blood before she herself is born. And this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother. We all share the blood of the first mother. We are truly children of one blood.”
― Layne Redmond, When The Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm
And again we are tuning into the womb connection this time quite literally… and I remember a time when one of my older sisters was pregnant. She lived on one of the Canary Islands at that time, and I went to visit to support her through the birth and and first few weeks postpartum. In the weeks leading up to her birth I worked on the other side of the island. One afternoon, I felt contraction - like cramps in my abdomen, and since it wasn’t my moon time, I had no idea what was going on. Until I suddenly knew that I must be feeling my sisters labour.
Not having a car, I went to the neighbouring commune and asked for their assistance, but the only person there with a car, did not believe me without confirmation through ‘more reliable’ sources... And I couldn’t contact my sister’s place, since she lived off-grid without phone in the mountains. Being stuck where I was, I felt the need to do something. I knew there were drummers in that commune and I asked them to drum. We lit a fire at the beach and I danced to the rhythm of the drums sending my best through the aether to my sister. Later that night the ‘non-believer’ offered to take me to my sister’s the next morning, because he wanted proof.
And proof he got! On arrival following the narrow goat track up to the little settlement, people called out, and told me my sister had birthed a healthy beautiful son. The birth was easy and fast thank the Goddess!
It took many years until I was blessed with the opportunity to craft my own Medicine Drum, when we started our 13 Warrioress Circles in February 2020. Beautifully and reverently facilitated by our then Priestess Clan Mother, Melissa. Since then my drum has been one of my greatest allies to reconnect friends, sisters, clients and myself to our journey of manifesting our aetherial blueprints.
When we connect through aether to the Universe and all within it we connect to something far more powerful than our minds or hearts can imagine.
Aether is also the overarching element ally for the Amazonian Arts. And I do believe as a collective we amplify the potency of this connection. We are all sisters connected through our womb energy. May we manifest the healing and wholing of the Sacred Feminine to call forth and balance a healthy sacred masculine.
So mote it be,
